Villa Högudden is a rare gem on the prestigious island of Lidingö, offering a unique blend of historical charm, timeless elegance, and modern comfort. Available exclusively for long-term rental, this exceptional villa is perfect for a family seeking a truly special and refined residence just 15 minutes from central Stockholm.
Originally built in 1876 as a summer residence for real estate broker Magnus Neijber, the villa is one of the largest and most distinguished summer homes ever constructed in the Stockholm archipelago. Inspired by English-American Stick Style architecture, it features a striking silhouette with turrets, verandas, bay windows, balconies, and richly detailed woodwork – much of which is beautifully preserved to this day.
In 1895, the villa underwent a significant transformation when Professor Ragnar Bruzelius, King Oscar II’s personal physician, acquired the property. The redesign was entrusted to architect Erik Lundroth, known for his grand villas in Djursholm and Saltsjöbaden. During this time, the villa took on the elegant, yellow-painted appearance it still holds today, with an interior that remains authentic and full of original features.
Villa Högudden’s story is rich with history. In the late 1800s, it was not uncommon for Oscar II himself to visit during summer, arriving aboard the royal steamboat Brage to the property’s private pier. The grounds once spanned down to the shoreline, and even today the Lidingö waterfront promenade passes just beyond the garden, providing beautiful walking paths along the sea.
The villa spans 450 m² over two levels and includes five spacious double bedrooms, expansive living spaces, and a beautifully kept garden that invites calm and reflection. It has housed notable families, featured in film, and served as a prestigious conference venue – and now, it offers the chance for a new family to write their chapter in this historic home.
Villa Högudden is listed as a protected building (byggnadsminne) for its architectural and cultural significance – described by Stockholm County Museum as a ”high-quality example of late 19th-century summer villa architecture.”
This is more than just a residence – it’s a lifestyle rooted in heritage, tranquility, and exclusivity. A long-term stay at Villa Högudden is a chance to experience a piece of Swedish history, surrounded by nature and the sea, yet close to the pulse of the capital.
